Expert Bush Trimming Services for Maryland

Bushes that swallow the front windows. A hedge that has gone shaggy on top and bare at the bottom. Shrubs scraping the siding, crowding the walkway or blocking the view from the driveway. Most yards in Maryland have at least one of these, and a pair of shears on a Saturday rarely fixes it for long.

That is the work we do. We are a family-owned company based at 207 Oakland Hall Road in Prince Frederick, in business since 2018, and JD brings more than 15 years of hands-on experience to every yard.

What makes our bush trimming different is timing and cleanup. We cut each shrub at the right time of year, using the right kind of cut, so you don’t lose next spring’s flowers or end up with a hedge that’s green on the outside and dead inside. And because we also run junk removal trucks, the clippings leave with us. Veterans, active-duty military and first responders receive a discount.

What’s Included in Every Bush Trimming Visit

  • A walk around the beds with you to agree on height and shape
  • Dead, broken and crossing branches cut out
  • Shrubs cut back from siding, windows, walkways and your A/C unit
  • Hand pruning for flowering shrubs, with shears only where a formal shape calls for them
  • Clippings raked out of the beds and off the lawn
  • Clippings hauled away

Bush Trimming Services We Offer

Most visits combine two or three of these. You get one quote for the whole yard.

Shrub Trimming and Shaping

Routine trimming for the shrubs along your foundation, walkways and beds. We keep them in proportion with the house and clear of windows and siding, so they look intentional instead of overgrown.

Hedge Trimming

Privacy hedges and formal hedges, trimmed straight and even. We shape hedges slightly wider at the base than at the top. That lets sunlight reach the lower branches, which keeps the bottom of the hedge green and full instead of thin and bare.

Overgrown Bush Cutback and Renewal

Shrubs that have outgrown their space can often be saved. Instead of one hard cut that can shock the plant, we use renewal pruning: removing about a third of the oldest stems at the base each year over two to three years. The shrub gets smaller and fuller at the same time.

Flowering Shrub Pruning

Azaleas, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, shrub roses and crape myrtles all bloom on their own schedule. Cut at the wrong time, they skip a year of flowers. We check what you have and prune it when it won’t cost you blooms.

Small Ornamental Tree Trimming

Japanese maples, dogwoods, redbuds and other small trees in your beds, up to 20 feet tall. Maryland’s Tree Expert Law requires a Licensed Tree Expert for tree trimming done for hire on taller trees, so larger tree work is handled separately.

Shrub Removal

Dead, diseased or unwanted shrubs taken out so you can replant or open up the space. For larger overgrown areas, our brush removal service clears it all at once.

Clipping Cleanup and Haul-Away

No bags left at the curb and no pile behind the shed. Clippings go on our trucks the same day.

Commercial and HOA Shrub Maintenance

Entrances, common areas, storefronts and office grounds, trimmed on a schedule that works around your hours.

When to Trim Bushes in Maryland

The right time depends on the shrub. These are the rules we follow, based on University of Maryland Extension guidance:

Spring-flowering shrubs. Azaleas, rhododendrons, forsythia and lilacs set next year’s flower buds in summer. Prune them right after they finish blooming, or you cut off next spring’s flowers.

Summer-flowering shrubs. Shrub roses, abelia, rose of Sharon and beautyberry bloom on new growth. Prune them in late winter or early spring, before new growth starts.

Evergreens and hedges. Heavier pruning belongs in early spring. Yews, junipers, hemlocks and arborvitae can also be headed back in spring or summer. Holly can be trimmed lightly in winter.

Boxwood. Thin in winter, from December through February.

Overgrown shrubs. Renewal pruning works best in late winter or early spring, before new growth.

Fall. UMD’s advice is not to prune shrubs in the fall. Cutting then can push new growth that won’t harden before winter. In the fall, we stick to cleanup and removing dead or broken branches, and we book shaping work for late winter.

Not Sure When Your Shrubs Should Be Cut?

Send us a few photos. We will tell you what you have, what it needs and the right month to do it, even if that means waiting.

How We Trim Popular Shrubs Across Maryland

Boxwood. One of the most common shrubs in Maryland landscapes. We thin boxwood rather than shearing it hard, because dense outer growth holds moisture and invites disease. UMD also recommends sanitizing tools between yards to avoid spreading boxwood blight.

Azalea and rhododendron. Pruned right after spring bloom, with hand pruners instead of shears so the large leaves aren’t torn.

Holly. Light trimming in winter, heavier pruning in early spring.

Hydrangea. Different types bloom on old or new wood, so we check which kind you have before we cut.

Crape myrtle. Thinned, not topped. Cutting crape myrtles down to stubs every year weakens the branches and leaves ugly knuckles.

Arborvitae and other evergreen hedges. Light, regular trims to keep the shape, without cutting back into old bare wood that may not regrow.

Shrub roses, including Knock Out roses. Cut back in late winter, before new growth.

Where the Clippings Go

You choose. We can haul every clipping away the same day, or leave them bagged where you want them.

Hauling it yourself is more work than it looks, and yard waste rules vary from county to county in Maryland. In Calvert County, where we are based, yard debris goes to the Appeal Landfill in Lusby, branches have to be cut to six feet or shorter, and the fee is charged by weight.

If any of your shrubs show signs of disease, especially boxwood, the clippings should be bagged and not composted, so the problem doesn’t spread to healthy plants.

How Much Does Bush Trimming Cost in Maryland?

There is no flat price, because no two yards are the same. These are the things that set the price:

  • Number of shrubs. A few foundation bushes cost less than a full yard of beds and hedges.
  • Size and height. Tall hedges and shrubs that need a ladder take more time.
  • How overgrown they are. A routine trim is faster than a first-time cutback or renewal pruning.
  • Type of cut. Hand thinning takes longer than shearing, but it’s better for most shrubs.
  • Access. Tight spaces, slopes and fences slow the work down.
  • Clippings. Haul-away is part of the job price.
  • One-time or recurring. Regular visits keep shrubs in shape and each visit shorter.

How much does bush trimming cost in Maryland?

It depends on how many shrubs you have, how tall and overgrown they are, the type of cut each one needs, and access. Clipping haul-away is part of the job price. Our estimates are free, come back within 24 hours, and give you one written price before work starts.

It depends on the shrub. University of Maryland Extension recommends pruning spring-flowering shrubs like azaleas right after they bloom, and summer-flowering shrubs and most hedges in late winter or early spring. Boxwood is best thinned from December through February.

It’s best not to shape shrubs in the fall. University of Maryland Extension advises against fall pruning because it can push new growth that won’t harden before winter. Removing dead or broken branches is fine. Save shaping for late winter or early spring.

Yes. Clippings are raked out of the beds and off the lawn and hauled away on our trucks the same day. If you would rather keep them for compost, we can leave them bagged instead.

Not if they are cut at the right time. Azaleas should be pruned right after they flower. Hydrangeas depend on the type, so we check which kind you have before cutting. Cut at the wrong time, flowering shrubs can skip a year of blooms.

I was looking for a company to do some cleanup in the flowerbeds in the front of my house and needed help getting rid of some pesky, ugly vines that had taken over. I was overwhelmed by the amount of work, JD came out quickly, took a look, assured me it was a small job and gave me a great price. He was friendly, communicative and reassuring with zero pressure. I’ll definitely be doing business with them again!

I highly recommend JDs Landscaping and Junk Trash Removal. They are professional, friendly, punctual, hard working, and very reasonably priced. They are also great at keeping the customer informed. They brought in 3 tons of white rock to deal with an erosion problem under our back deck. The final product is neat and clean and looks great. They also trimmed back some trees for us. I’d use them again anytime. Attached are before and after pictures of their work.
