Prince Frederick, MD and All of Calvert County and Surrounding Areas
Leaf removal means clearing fallen leaves off your lawn, garden beds and hard surfaces, then taking them off the property. That’s the job. We’re a leaf removal service in Maryland based in Prince Frederick, we work across Calvert County and nearby Southern Maryland every fall, and we haul away every load ourselves.
Fall usually goes the same way. The oaks let go, one good rain presses the leaves flat, and by Thanksgiving the grass under them has turned yellow. So you rake. You give it a weekend, maybe two, and then you hit the real problem: where do the piles go? In Calvert County, leaves count as yard debris, and the neighborhood drop-off centers aren’t set up for them.
That’s the part we take off your hands. JD’s Landscaping & Junk Trash Removal is a family-owned leaf removal company in Maryland, based at 207 Oakland Hall Road in Prince Frederick. We clear the lawn, the beds and the driveway, load the leaves onto our own trucks and drive them off. You don’t bag anything. You don’t make a landfill run.
We’ve worked in Calvert County since 2018, and there are more than 15 years of hands-on experience behind the crew. We also run junk removal, which most lawn companies can’t offer. So if there’s a pile of fallen limbs, a broken grill or an old brush heap behind the shed, it can go out on the same trip as the leaves.
Most yards need two or three of these. We price the whole property as one job, so you aren’t paying item by item.
This is a one-time clear of the whole property: lawn, beds, foundation plantings, fence lines, driveway, walks and patio. It’s the right choice for most homes with a handful of mature trees. Time it for after most of the leaves are down. In Southern Maryland that’s usually mid to late November.
One visit rarely cuts it on a heavily wooded lot. Maples and tulip poplars drop early, and the oaks hang on for weeks after. With a single late cleanup, the lawn spends most of November under a wet mat. For these properties we schedule [2 or 3] visits across the season, so the leaves never sit long enough to do damage.
Beds take more care than lawns. We pull leaves out from around shrubs, perennials and foundation plantings without blowing the mulch away or snapping stems. We also clear the leaves packed against the house, since that trapped moisture draws rot and bugs.
You don’t have to remove every leaf, though. The University of Maryland Extension says moving leaves onto planting beds is the best option for wildlife. If you’d like a layer left in the beds as winter cover, tell us when you book. We’ll put it there instead of hauling it off. Ongoing bed care is part of our garden bed maintenance service.
Wet leaves on pavement are slippery, and steps and sloped driveways are the worst of it. Leave them on concrete or pavers all winter and they can stain. We clear every hard surface and leave it clean, not just pushed to the edge of the lawn.
This is where we’re different from most lawn services. Because we run junk removal trucks, the leaves leave with us. You won’t have bags stacked at the curb waiting on a pickup, and we don’t push piles into the tree line.
Leaves that sat all winter are heavier and wetter, and they’re matted into the grass. A spring cleanup gets them out along with whatever branches came down over the winter, so the lawn can green up on time. For the rest of the spring work, like bed cutbacks and fresh mulch, see our seasonal cleanup service.
Fall storms bring down leaves and limbs together. We clear both. If a storm leaves a tree cracked or leaning, our tree removal crew can take a look. Our phone is answered around the clock, so a Saturday night storm doesn’t have to wait until Monday.
On a business property, leaves become a safety problem before they become a looks problem. Wet leaves on an entrance or walkway are a slip risk for customers and tenants. In parking lots, they wash into storm drains and back them up.
We clear lawns, walkways, entrances and parking areas for offices, retail sites, churches, HOAs and rental communities across Calvert County. The work gets scheduled around your hours, not the other way around.
Not always. We’d rather tell you that than sell you a visit you don’t need.
The University of Maryland Extension recommends removing fallen leaves when they thickly cover the lawn. Lighter cover can be shredded with a mower or moved into beds. So if one or two trees give your yard a light dusting, a mower may be all you need.
Mature oaks and poplars are another story. Once leaves cover most of the grass, a mower can’t chop them fine enough, and wet leaves mat into a layer that blocks the light. That timing hurts. Most Maryland lawns are cool-season grasses like tall fescue, and fall is when they’re still growing and storing up for winter. Grass that spends November buried goes into winter weak and comes out of it thin.
If you aerated and overseeded this fall, clear those areas first. New seedlings are the first thing a heavy leaf layer kills. Our lawn care page covers aeration and seeding.
Here’s our rule of thumb. If you can still see most of the grass, mow the leaves in. If you can’t, get them off.
Plenty of leaf removal pages say “eco-friendly disposal” and leave it there. Disposal rules in Maryland are set county by county, so here’s how it works in Calvert County, where we’re based. It also explains why hauling leaves yourself is more work than it looks.
Calvert County classifies leaves as vegetation and yard debris, the same category as brush, branches and stumps, and a tip fee applies. Yard debris goes to the Appeal Landfill on Sweetwater Road in Lusby. The charge is based on weight. Commercial vehicles, ours included, can only drop off at Appeal and can’t use the neighborhood convenience centers. The county does charge to recycle yard debris, but its Solid Waste Division also offers free mulch to Calvert County residents.
No two properties here are the same. Waterfront lots deal with salt spray, wind and Critical Area rules. Newer builds in Dunkirk and Owings sit on compacted builder soil under thin sod, which is why aeration does more for them than new plants would.
Whether it’s a full landscape design or just getting the beds back under control, the first step is the same. We look at the property, tell you honestly what it needs, and send a written estimate within 24 hours.

Timing matters more than most people think. Here’s how the season usually runs in Southern Maryland.
Early to mid October. Maples, poplars and dogwoods start dropping. If the cover is light, mow it in. On newly seeded areas, clear the leaves right away.
Late October through November. This is peak leaf fall and when most properties need a full cleanup. Book early, because this is the busiest stretch of the season. Maryland’s lawn fertilizer blackout starts November 16, so any fall feeding has to go down before then.
Early December. Oaks are the last to let go. Wooded lots in Huntingtown, Dunkirk and St. Leonard often need a final pass once they finally drop.
March and April. Spring cleanup. Whatever’s left from winter comes off before the grass starts growing.
Book now and we’ll get you on the schedule before the late-fall rush. A few photos get you the fastest quote.

Most of our fall leaf calls come from a few kinds of property owners.
Wooded lots. Some lots drop more leaves than anyone can keep up with on weekends. A property with a dozen mature oaks is a good example.
Big yards. Some people just don’t want to spend November raking and bagging, or aren’t up for it. That’s reason enough.
Home sales. Sellers and real estate agents call because a leaf-covered yard hides the lawn and makes a listing look neglected. Give us your listing date and we’ll work to it.
Rentals. Landlords and property managers use us at turnover or on a fall schedule, so rentals look kept and walkways stay safe.
Estates. When a house sits empty through the fall, the yard gets away fast. We can clear the leaves outside while our estate cleanout service handles the inside.
Businesses. Businesses, churches and HOAs call for scheduled clearing of lawns, walkways and parking areas.
It depends on lot size, tree cover, the number of visits and how many loads we haul away. A small yard with a few trees is a quick, inexpensive job. A wooded lot under mature oaks can take a crew and several truckloads. Estimates are free and come back within 24 hours. Text photos to (301) 835-9340 for the fastest quote.
For a single cleanup, mid to late November, after most of the leaves are down. Wooded properties usually do better with visits spread across late October, November and early December, because oaks drop last. Clear any newly seeded lawn as soon as leaves start covering it.
It depends on the work. Landscaping that qualifies as home improvement on a residence falls under the Maryland Home Improvement Commission, and MHIC licensure carries a minimum general liability insurance requirement of $500,000. Separately, any business applying fertilizer or pesticides for hire needs Maryland Department of Agriculture certification plus a business license for that specific activity. Ask any contractor which credentials they hold before they start, and ask for the certificate rather than a verbal answer.
A light layer is fine and can be mowed in. A thick layer is a problem. Wet leaves mat down and block light from cool-season grass right when it’s storing energy for winter, and the lawn comes out of spring thin and patchy. The University of Maryland Extension recommends removing leaves when they thickly cover the lawn.
